6 X 9 Books

This format has been optimized for printing a small portable book with a large illustration on its own page. You can print your 6 x 9 book so it takes up the full size of an 8.5 x 11 page or you can print it in the actual size of 6 x 9. If you print at 8.5 x 11 it will be easy to three hold punch the book and place it in a folder or binder . However the book will not be as portable as the smaller 6 x 9  format.  To conserve paper as you set up your printing, practice with a small number of pages, for example first printed pages 8 to 10. This will allow you to make sure the birds are printed out the way you want without wasting paper.

There is a setting in Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 in the Print dialog box (File->Print) called Choose Paper Source by PDF page size. If you leave this box unchecked Adobe Reader will stretch your page to fit the entire area of the paper size you are using. So if the paper is 8.5 x 11 inch letter size and the PDF is 6 x 9 inch, when its printed it will take up the entire page of the paper, leaving small 1 inch margins around the page. If instead you you check the box Adobe Reader will shrink the page to be exactly 6 x 9 in which case it will leave large margins around the page that would need to be trimmed with a paper cutter. If you wish to bind your book so its small check the box, otherwise leave it unchecked.

Note this book is not set up for printing two pages per sheet. You can do it, but the text page for each bird will end up on the next page, and be out of alignment. If you want two pages per sheet make up a new guide using the 8.5 x 11 format.

8.5 x 11 Books

This format has been optimized for printing a table top book with one bird per page and a smaller illustration. It is also good for printing two bird pages per sheet of paper, which makes it easy to carry on field trips. When you print two pages per sheet of paper you can fold the paper in half which essentially gives you double side pages. To print an 8.5 x 11 inch book simply use the basic printing options in Adobe Reader. See below for binding instructions.

The 8.5 x 11inch format allows you to print two pages per sheet. However keep in mind if you print two pagers per sheet on 8.5 x 11 letter sized paper the font will be very small.  To make the font more readable in this format use legal size 8.5 x 14 inch paper. To print two pages per sheet use the following steps.

  • In the Print dialog box select File->Print.
  • Select Page Scaling: Multiple Pages per sheet.
  • Set Pages per Sheet: 2.
  • Select Page Order: Horizontal.
  • Select Print Page Border if you want a thin box around your pages.

Binding: After printing you can fold each sheet down the middle and then staple all the pages together or three hole punch them and place the pages in a binder or folder.
