Red headed woodpecker

Red headed woodpecker

I have no idea why this crazy woodpecker was pecking on a metal pole! After all, he is a WOOD pecker!

My dad told me they do that to sharpen their beaks.. i've seen pileated woodpeckers do that. Nice shot by the way... only got picture of those like two days ago.. there were about 4 or five but were up in a tree so a little to far for good shots but at least got the red head
I don't think that they do this to sharpen their beak. My guess is he is doing this as a territorial display, or to attract a female.
Woodpeckers do this alot. It does seem to be territorial. They have been known to peck on garbage cans, gutters and even old truck beds. Seems they like to find these items around their favorite human homes and they can become your alarm clock on some cold mornings, if they carry it too far.
This is a great shot btw!
