Here are a few tips that will aid our ornithologists David Lukas and Simone Whitecloud identify your bird.

The main thing is to describe the bird in as much detail as possible. Try to provide answers to these questions. Please do not send us email on bird questions, we can only answer in the forum.

  • First where did you see the bird? What state or province did you see the bird, and what was the physical environment, such as in a tree, shrub, etc.
  • How was the bird behaving? Flying, eating on the ground, flittering in the trees?
  • What are its physical characteristics? Most important are the body shape, predominant color and the head detail, size and bill shape. Was it the shape of a duck, song bird, or hawk? Was it mostly gray with a red head or was it brown with white underneath? Did its head have a particular pattern, such as stripes, or was it plain? Was it the size of a Robin or a Seagull? Did it have a cone or dagger shaped bill. What was its eye color? How about the colors and patterns on the breast.
