Dear David and Simone,

Back with lots of questions after a wonderful week driving the length of the Rio Grande from Bosque del Apache all the way to Boca Chica. These (parrots? parakeets?) were flying around in large flocks in  the neighborhood of Sabal Palms. When I check green + parrots + texas in the data base nothing quite matches. This site: http://jboyd.net/Texas05.html lists them simply as Green Parakeets. What's the story on these guys?

Niebla,

Funny you should ask, I picked up your posting within seconds of writing a new species account on Green Parakeets!

Check these websites for details:

http://www.greglasle...enparakeet.html

There seems to be some debate whether these are released cage birds or naturally occurring. I think they are natural populations because these parakeets range from Nicaragua north to the American border anyway. They are very local but common in parts of south Texas and it sounds like you found them!

Nice sighting,

David
