Hi. I'm a member of Cornell Ornithology Lab Feeder Watch Program and would like a little help before I send a report to their data base on 2 sparrows that have just started hanging out with the dark eyed juncos at my feeders.
Location Trinity County, Northern California, mountain valley 2400', rainy, snowy, mixed deciduous, conifers. Bird: Dark brown streaked back, brown wings two wing bars, crown lt brown with two faint bars, center of crown v finely streaked with hint of yellow. lt brown supercilium to bill. faint eye bar stopping at eye. no wisker. bill brown to tan. neck, breast, and belly grey, legs pink to tan. guessing 5 1/2 to 6. At first, thought I had a juvenile first winter Chipping, but I am 500-600 miles north of the winter range in any of my field guides. Now I've seen a picture of winter plumage golden crowned on this web site and am leaning in that direction. Also, Iv'e read that in California juv white crowned often keep juv plumage thru first winter. Anyone with hints of where to go next.
