I don't have one of the bird call devices but someone on an Audubon field trip I was on had one. It seemed to work pretty well. It makes a high pitched squeeky sound. The birds (especially the warblers) were intrigued by it.
I have an Iphone with IBirdPro and various other bird calls on it that I use. It's about as effective as pishing. It seems to be hit & miss. Some birds respond really well to it and others could care less.
