Recently I've been seeing this grey sparrow or finch at the birdseed tray in our backyard, in the Los Angeles westside area.  We get lots of house finches and sparrows, as well as mourning doves at this feeder. This bird is the only one I haven't been able to ID. It is the same size as the other sparrows and finches, is uniformly grey with no noticeable markings other than its small topknot. Its bill is conical, same as the sparrows & finches. I couldn't find it in any of my bird books, nor in the whatbird.com site, after searching by family, type, color, etc.

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions on this bird.

that sounds like a titmouse of some sort to me, maybe a tufted one.

Sounds pretty good for an Oak Titmouse . At first I thought it might be a Tufted Titmouse, but as you can see, they are not found anywhere near Los Angeles, and they have orange on their side.
