Matches Sibley's description for Eurasian Tree Sparrow: white collar, rufous crown and dark spot on cheek, similar to house sparrow and 'Uncommon and very local in St. Louis MO. Thanks for sharing the photo. Never saw one before.

I say Passer montanus for sure, great photo! I have never seen this super local exotic either. Why are they so much more restricted in range than House Sparrows anyway?

Wow, that's very cool. I had no idea this bird existed. Another released sparrow, huh?

Yup. They haven't spread much farther than certain cities in the mideast, though.

I find it amusing that you guys think they are rare. Where they do live the are very prolific, at my house I have about 30. Sometimes they are as bad as House Sparrows.

If you want to find one, go to the nature preserve just north of where the old route 66 alignment crossed chain of rocks bridge and head north to the preserve. I asked the ranger at the visitor center where I could find one and she giggled and told me to look at the feeder outside. Plenty of them around all the time.

Very nice photo. I hope to see one or more some day. There are a few in the south east portion of Iowa.
