What bird is this - some type of heron?

On Jan 2, 2010, I saw this bird flying over the Pearl River in Jackson, Mississippi.  I'm guessing it's some time of heron, but I'm not clear what kind?  I guess it's possible it's a Great Blue Heron, but it looks very different in flight than the Great Blues I see hunting along the pond banks.  Also, there appear to be some different colors along the leading edges of the wings.

Here's the same shot, but lightened to show detail under the wings.  I've also intentionally over-saturated the colors on this image to make the colors stand out.

I would say it is a Great Blue Heron.

I agree, and the colours on the leading edge of the wing are what you expect on a great blue heron.
