I would like to know on what basis birds for a specific location are grouped. For example, I you select "Maine" you will find some strange birds like Calliope hummingbird, rufous hummingbird, red throated loon etc.

I assume that you include rare or exceptional sightings? I would have preferred that you not include such birds but I understand that it is a "editorial choice"...

Louis: That is exactly why you see them, these birds are actually on the state list for Maine. Some are exceptional but they have been spotted. If we leave them out some people dont like it. If we leave them in some people dont like it. So you just can't please everyone :) I guess the perfect solution would be a switch to let you pick between rarity and common. Of course they we have to explain what that means. Well you get the idea.
