Got a nice thank-you note from USGS when I reported this guy (or girl, apparently they don't know either).  I could only make out the "23J" on the black plastic tag, but apparently that was enough:

Band number: 0938-12323  23J

Species:  Brown Pelican   Sex:  Unknown

Hatched in 2002, Banded 12/3/2002, 5 Mi North of Miami, FL in Intracoastal Waterway, Pelican Harbor Seabird Sta., Inc.

Encountered 12/23/2009, 0.1 Mi East of Stuart, FL in Intracoastal Waterway (Manatee Pocket)

Black Oystercatcher at Pillar Point, CA.  March 2010.  I searched for a nearby Black Oystercatcher banding program but could not find one.

Steel and blue metal on the left, green and white plastic on the right.  I dunno, some birds just go overboard with the jewelry.

Look at that crest, too!  I bet this guy is a troublemaker!

That is such a cool-looking bird! (Nice shot, too!)  Wish I had them in my area.,.

this bird  is absolutely gorgeous!  now what is it?  living in Kansas I haven't seen one like this.  thanks.  the bi colored beak and "crown" are amazing.  I am pretty sure it is a raptor of some kind but no idea.

It's a Crested Caracara.   Taxonomically, I think it falls somewhere between a falcon and a vulture.

Does anyone ever report the banded birds?

Per your comment Seattle, I just reported my Canadas at the following site:

http://www.pwrc.usgs...age/call800.htm

Edit: I got a response from a student at Arizona State University that banded my geese.  Great story.

Yep.  I Google to see if I can find the program.  The Black Oystercatcher I posted above was evidently from Alaska and was banded 7 years ago.  Someone at San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory helped find the program and they were pleased to have the report.

I believe the same Crested Caracara as Lyceel's.  Same bands.
