I have several bottom feeders which are black and brown? or gray? or grayish brown? The second color is very close to the color of a sparrow, wren, and other similar birds. I'm wondering if they could be imature Mourning Doves. They are not quite as big as a robin but close. I'm trying to identify them but no luck so far.

A photo would help a great deal, but I can tell you that they are probably NOT immature Mourning Doves, as the fledglings are the same size and look almost identical to the adults; just not as "plump" and feathers are not as smooth.  They could be almost anything based on your description so I think you would need to provide a photo - even if it's a poor quality photo the people on this forum are great at ID'ing with some of the blurriest shots.
