I'm camped near Malheur.  Have been birding for a week.  Have done the entire auto-tour.  Have seen lots of birds, and have seen lots of Sandhill Cranes overhead, but I have yet to see even one on the ground.  Have visited what are purported to be the best staging grounds on the refuge, but still-- nothing.  Clearly I'm doing something wrong.

What time of day and at exactly what locations on the refuge am I likely to actually see the cranes while they are on the ground, especially as they arrive or depart?  Surely someone must know (didn't have any luck at the visitors' center).

Thanks in advance!

It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong, but rather just having some bad luck...be persistent and you will get your grounded Sandhill!
