According to a recent study published last week in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, a giant bird weighing 35-63 pounds with a 17 foot wingspan once soared over mountains and oceans in search of its prey.  This bird, recently named Pelagornis chilensis, had a large bony beak with tooth-like structures.  It is believed that this toothed beak allowed P. chilensis to efficiently grab its slippery prey, such as fish and squids, as it soared above the water.  Scientists were able to learn so much about this ancient giant thanks to a highly preserved skeleton recently unearthed in Chile.  Currently, the wandering albatross holds the record for largest wingspan as it can ranging up to 11.5 feet.
