here is a shot that shows the under pattern of this rat snake. notice how the pattern is absent from the front ~ 1/3 of the snakes belly

these guys are very interesting, narrow-mouthed toads. i don't know about population trends in them, but i don't find them nearly as often as i used to
in very young individuals, the blue on the tail is even more stunning. five lined again

thanks jim. are you refering to broad-headed skinks? that is the only really huge sp i encounter. and yes, i do see them about as often as i see FL skinks. a very old five lined skink can be pretty large as well and have a red head. once they get that big, all the blue in the tail is gone, and the lines almost disappear.
those two sp can be pretty confusing where i live, because very young and individuals to ~ 4 or 5 inches can be almost identical. then when you get on the east side of the Miss River, you have SE five-lined skinks added to the mix. it can get pretty difficult to tell who you have.

Yeah, skinks are just lizards. Just like bluebirds and robins are thrushes.
The only skinks I see at my house (Five-Lined Skinks) have brilliant blue tails.

An interesting and diverse collection! Here is my contribution. This thing is at least 4 or 5 feet long, and was in the tree tops, observed and photographed from a boardwalk. I still haven't figured out exactly WHAT it was! South Florida..fresh water marsh habitat.

That's an iguana. They've been introduced in South Florida, and like many introduced species, are causing a problem for native wildlife down there. Here's another one...
