Can you suggest what potential species of Warbler (or similar bird) I saw today?
Hiking on a ridge off Whiteface Mt. in the Northern Adirondacks, today, November 6, and a little below the "alpine zone" at 4200'. I was in a dense spruce & conifer forest with short trees and significant blowdowns / dead trees.
I was not able to capture a photo of the birds, but the following - to the best of my memory - were distinctive features:
- dark wings with prominent white bars
- eyelines that appeared to be dark running from the beak to the eyes. Behind and/or above the eyes, a light stripe extended back to the back of the crown.
- There appeared to be some brownish stripes/streaks on the breast
They seemed to be enjoying the abundant Spruce cones. I've attached a photo of where I was...
