unknown bird with flycatcher-like behavior, 7-9 inches?

This is indeed a Northern Shrike. Very cool! They like to spear they're prey on thorn trees or barbed wire to impress their girlfriends with the number of dead things that they have hanging there.

Given the low contrast and faint barring on the chest, this is a first year bird. And I agree, I'm always excited to see these guys.

Ignoring range (no guide in front of me), one clue that it's a Northern rather than a Loggerhead is the shape of the mask, which would be thicker at the back in a Loggerhead.
