Sacrilege breading them!

Saute them up and eat 'em right outta the pan before they have a chance to sneak away when you're not looking.

Another month or so and they'll be in season here, and it's pouring rain. Despise the rain, but it could make for a good Morel and King Bolete season! (Morels are my favorite bar-none. I also gather things like the Chantrels which are supposed to be "better" - but I'll take a Morel any day!)

I grew up in the East Bay Area (near San Francisco,) and one of the very few memories I have of my dad was picking mushrooms under the big oak trees there. We don't get many down here (not enough rain.)

Think of morels more as"ambrosia" than as a "mushroom"

I collect them like six our seven pounds at a time. They're pretty good dried too but never as good as fresh!

Ambrosia, I believe, is the "nectar of the gods." In other words, something divine and too good for human consumption.

I've had morels once. A very generous friend found several and gave them away. Even though I don't like mushrooms either, I thought the morels were quite tasty!

The really great thing is that my dad likes to hunt for morels which fits in well with birding trips.

Yes it's common, but I like the way iit photographed!

Morels ROCK! I live in "morel country".... make sure they are REAL Morels (not False).... slice in half (to make sure there's no slugs) rinse lightly, and saute quickly in butter and garlic. Fer shure, don't bread them! Too tender for that!

Birding and shrooming would go well together - one of you is studying the ground and terrain, the other is studying the trees and sky! I've stumbled upon my best shrooming sites out birding. Or is that my best birds out shrooming?

Morels, a very tasty fungus. We don't bread them either, just saute in butter. Yum! I love the pictures and have always found them fun to photograph. I'd have to do some digging to find mine.

Here are a few Jellies I found this morning. The wind was blowing way too hard to do any real birding so I concentrated on fungus.

This one is called commonly known as a Jelly Ear. From what I have read it is edible and used in Asian cuisine. They say it does not really taste like anything though.

When I was walking I noticed this tree from far away. It looked like it was decorated for Christmas.

When I got closer I saw that this is what the orange things looked like. Kind of creepy in a beautiful sort of way. Come to find out they are a type of fungal gall that targets Juniper species and only fruits when conditions are right.
