Heard a distinct bird call in the yard, but I didn't see the bird. I've been unable to match it to any of our usual yardbirds. It was three spaced out short notes of the same pitch followed by a long note about a minor third down. We live in Oakland, CA. I hope this is enough information. Thanks.

Sounds like a white-throated sparrow.

Sounds exactly like the beginning of Beethoven's 5th Symphony!

Try this. It doesn't seem to be the typical call, but perhaps it's this version you heard.

It might also be the beginning of a song sparrow call. Was there anything after the fourth note?

Check all the towhee songs, as suggested by Liam.

Thanks for all the help. It seems White-throated has two notes then a descent. I did check out California Towhee because they're one of our most frequent birds, but didn't seem to match. I'll go back and double-check. David I was thinking the same thing about Beethoven's 5th. Scott the link you gave is to about 40 different calls. Is there one you had in mind specifically? Again thanks so much.

Yes, the first one. The rest are a bit different.
