New birds 2013; Red Flanked Bluetail (Queen's Park, New Westminster Jan 15, 2013), Gyrfalcon (Hastings Park/Viterra building near Second Narrows, Jan 26, 2013), Brambling (Laurel/17th Feb 5th/2013), Red-naped Sapsucker (west side of Fraserview golf course, in lane by 7878 Vivian, Apr 5/2013). Sora (pond at Colony Farm April 8/13). Northern Rough-winged Swallow (Col Farm May 26/13). Lazuli Bunting and WETA May 2013 Col Farm).
New birds 2012; Black throated gray warbler, Cassin's vireo, (Hammond's Flycatcher,Chipping Sparrow were id'd at bird banding station), Vaux Swift, Cliff Swallow, Dowitcher, Merlin, Peregrine, Eastern Kingbird, Spotted Sandpiper, YHBB, Caspian Tern, Purple Martin, Warbling Vireo, Western Tanager.

The question of Rufous and Allen's comes up many times in the ID forum. The bird in your pictures is not an after-hatch-year male. Per Williamson, "adult female and immatures are generally indistinguishable in the field but may be separated by close examination of tail characteristics". There have been a number or Rufous/Allen's IDs done based on location and time of year which is not accurate.

The back is predominantly green from what I can see in the first photo? Any of just the back? A green back and rufous rump would make it an Allen's. The Rufous have green splotches on the back.

Jodie, that second pic you posted doesn't look like any of the rufous males we get here. The gorget is not as "fluffy" or as "fingered" as the one in your shot. The ones here have this gorgeous gorget (she said, alliteratively) with much finer feathering. Actually, looking at the first photo more carefully, I see that there's a definite overlap of the gorget to the back, which we don't see here, either. I'm not saying the IDs are wrong, I'm just saying that it's amazing how different a species can be from one area to another. Nice photos, as usual.

The OPs bird is not an adult male, so unfortunately the back coloration pattern really isn't going to help. Even with adult birds, up to 5% of Rufous can have a predominately green back and look nearly identical to Allen's. I don't think I can make an ID unless a good picture of the tail features is available.

The last picture appears to be an adult male, likely Allen's... maybe MattV can weigh in again on that one? I'm not sure how to eliminate the 5% of Rufous that are Green-backed and don't have a hummingbird book.
