I saw this bird on the St. John's River in Central Florida yesterday. At first glance, I thought it might be a common gallinule but as I look at it, I am just not sure.

Hope the link works!

I've never seen the bird, but it kind of looks like a Purple Gallinule since it lacks that white stripe along its side. Also, it has that overall blue body colour as well. Wait for someone who has experience with these birds though!

I'd say common gallinule. The purple would have a greenish back.

Again, I have nothing to go on but guides, but might this be a juvenile? Or have they already molted into their adult plumage by this time?

I have to agree with Purple Gallinule. Commons don't tend to walk like that, they like to "squat" or swim.
Also, it appears too blueish for Common.

It seems the Purple has won. Thanks a lot! I know a Purple Gallinule but in the lily pads with no face or huge yellow feet, it was beyond me! Thanks so much!

Its a Common Moorhen!

Common Moorhen = Common Gallinule now. That possibility has been discussed in this thread already. Could you let us know why you think it's a Common rather than a Purple?

I think it is because you can barely see the bill which is red with the tip of yellow in which the Common Gallinule has.

Purple Gallinules also have the yellow tip I believe.

it could be a Purple Swamphen? Or a Crossbreed of a Purple Gallinule x Common Gallinule

Hmm, I don't see nearly enough green for Purple Gallinule, the blues don't look as bright, and I think I see part of the white flank stripe peeking through the foliage. If there hadn't been contention, I probably wouldn't have thought twice about IDing this as a Common Gallinule.

The photo is underexposed and the colors aren't as vibrant as they would be in real life.
I do see what you mean about the white flanks, though, didn't see that at first.
Still, odd behavior for a Common Gallinule.
