I saw this bird on the St. John's River in Central Florida yesterday. At first glance, I thought it might be a common gallinule but as I look at it, I am just not sure.

I've never seen the bird, but it kind of looks like a Purple Gallinule since it lacks that white stripe along its side. Also, it has that overall blue body colour as well. Wait for someone who has experience with these birds though!

Looks like a Purple Gallinule from what I can see.

I'd say common gallinule. The purple would have a greenish back.

Again, I have nothing to go on but guides, but might this be a juvenile? Or have they already molted into their adult plumage by this time?I'd say common gallinule. The purple would have a greenish back.

Common Moorhen = Common Gallinule now. That possibility has been discussed in this thread already. Could you let us know why you think it's a Common rather than a Purple?Its a Common Moorhen!

I think it is because you can barely see the bill which is red with the tip of yellow in which the Common Gallinule has.

Purple Gallinules also have the yellow tip I believe.I think it is because you can barely see the bill which is red with the tip of yellow in which the Common Gallinule has.

Hmm, I don't see nearly enough green for Purple Gallinule, the blues don't look as bright, and I think I see part of the white flank stripe peeking through the foliage. If there hadn't been contention, I probably wouldn't have thought twice about IDing this as a Common Gallinule.

The photo is underexposed and the colors aren't as vibrant as they would be in real life.
I do see what you mean about the white flanks, though, didn't see that at first.
Still, odd behavior for a Common Gallinule.
