The field where I shot these has just been mowed but I guess these guys made it out safe. There were 5 young altogether. Today in Chattanooga.
Here is mom trying to lead me away. I followed her for a bit just to make her happy.

Everytime I see these little guys following behind their momma, it reminds me of the Partridge Family TV show... I know... giving away my age!!

I got a close up picture of a killdeer egg just a few days ago... can't wait to go back and see if there's any babies!

Those are so sweet. We have Killdeer in the area; we see and hear them all the time, but we've never seen any eggs or babies.

first of all those pics of the baby Killdeer are adorable!!
My husband and I saw a Killdeer yesterday. We stopped at a gas station in a little tiny town in ND and in the ditch there was some cattails and water about a foot or two from the water and out in the open was a Killdeer. At first I thought it was injured because it didn't fly away, but then we got a little closer and it looked at us and make a call. Still not getting up but we decided we better leave her alone. So we walked around the ditch and saw some House Sparrows; nothing to exciting. Then came back around the front of the ditch and the Killdeer was gone standing about 15-20 feet from where she was laying, then I noticed three little eggs! I was excited but worried that we may have scared her from the eggs. We took a few pictures and left as we were in search of Greater Prairie Chickens and came back within about thirty minute to an hour and she still was not sitting on the eggs. So my question is did we just "kill" three baby Killdeer by getting to close to her nest, will she abandon ? And do Killdeer often nest out in the open like that?

yes their "nests" tend to be just a spot on the ground. The eggs should be fine. By moving away from the eggs she was just leading you away from the nest as she would any predator. this shot is of the parent doing that and faking an injury to be more attractive to the "predator"

Yeah she was doing that too! Well thats good then she should go back to her eggs.
