When using a tripod (at least with my camera please check yours and or your lens reccomendation) make sure you turn OFF the shake reduction.

I use a Pentax K-x and I always forget to do it so my first shots of the day are slightly blurry.... :(

Mode two for canon. Allows it to cancel in the axis not panning.

2nd generation Nikon VR doesn't have this problem either (also allowing single-axis panning).

Some Nikon of the bigger lenses also offer a "Tripod" option for when the tripod is locked down, specifically to cancel out the harmonic vibration caused by the tripod itself.

Yep, the 500mm VR I rented back in October has a 'Tripod' switch so that you can use VR while on a tripod. Worked great on the monopod!

You might have better luck with "normal" on a monopod. The "tripod" setting is specifically for when the lens is mounted on a tripod with the head locked down. It's only meant to counter vibration from the tripod and head.

Here's the info from Nikon:

On Canon, there's a mode to cancel vibration in all axis, a mode to cancel vibration in one axis (for panning), and then the latest go-around, I understand, has a Mode 3, which is the vibration damping like you're talking about.
