If I had to pick just one I think it would be American Oystercatcher. They're very photogenic & always up to something interesting.

This is a great topic! Those are absolutely beautiful shots. I've never seen an American Oystercatcher, only a Black Oystercatcher in Alaska. It was definitely photogenic though! My first photo of just a bird actually, so it's near and dear to my heart.

Considering I only saw one once though, I can't say it's my favourite bird to photograph. For me it's got to be either Sandhill Cranes or Pileated Woodpeckers. I always seem to get very close to them and they always seem to be do something interesting for me!

For example: Pileated Woodpecker from two days ago and the Sandhill Crane from my avatar!

I really like taking pictures of warblers. It is soooo hard so when you get a good one you get very excited. (at least they are hard for me)

I have lots of birds that are favorites, so it's hard to pick one, but looking through my photostream, I do seem to have an affinity for Red Bellied Woodpeckers.

Like many others, I find it hard to pick just one bird as my favorite to photograph, or my favorite bird in any other category for that matter. I did look through my collection though and it appears that I have an affection for photographing common loons. There are not many birds that I will "chase" ("for lack of a better word") but I will paddle and/or drift from one end of a lake to the other and float around for hours on end if the loons are around to entertain me.

Not only couldn't I pick just one bird as a favorite to photograph, I couldn't pick just one photo as a favorite to share either.

And last but not least, one of my first photos that kind of set the bar pretty high for getting an upgraded shot of a common loon.

LS!!!! I am in TOTAL AWE! Those are the absolute BEST images I've ever seen.... great quality as well as emotion. You totally ROCK! The Loon On Nest brings tears to my eyes....as well as the incredible "baby" shots. Sigh.

Whew.... well, not only are Loons my all time favorite bird, they are also my favorite subject (YEAH... pick a Black and White bird as a novice photographer!) .... my house (in some places) looks a bit like a Loon Shrine.

I have hundreds of Loon shots.... But, NO BABIES! These are just a couple.... (probably not the best, just the easiest to access). Hoping to acquire a better camera this Spring.... Hope you enjoy...

Thanks for the kind words, sandylee. I think the reason I like photographing loons so much may very well be because of the fact that I do it mostly from the canoe. I love canoeing and I love photogaphing birds, the loons make it easy for me to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Perfect! I am fortunate enough to watch their behavior from my house... it SO differs from any other waterfowl. And if you are quiet out in a canoe, kayak or other non-obtrusive boat, they almost seem pleased to check YOU out! The "do not disturb" "sign" is important for Loons.
Their unique combination of intelligence, protectiveness, aggression, shyness and curiosity is spell-binding.

Hope they help you enjoy both worlds again this year LS!
