Just thought I would give a heads up to anyone in the Chicago area, or anyone who likes rarities in general, that there was a probable Elaenia species Flycatcher spotted by the Gyllenhaals. This is MEGA RARITY, only one other accepted record in the ABA area for an Elaenia species. It has many of the top birders in the country including Kenn Kaufman convinced. The thread where this is discussed is very interesting. You can find it here. http://www.ilbirds.c...p?topic=50480.0

Yeah, I've driven 4 hours for a bird before. I'm in Mo., and I got a post Charlene shared on the Missouri listserv about the Elaenia, but it's a lot more than four hours away from where I am, unfortunately. I don't know anything about the Gyllenhaals, but I read the Illinois listserv discussion, and they're obviously great birders. How exciting to be the one to spot such a rare bird.

I have met them a few times; as much as they get around don't be surprised if you run into them in the field. Both the brothers are still in High School and are among the top birders in the state. Very nice people too. Aaron, the younger one, got me on my lifer Red Phalarope when we were on a field trip together last fall. I am really happy for them.

The bird was refound this morning, and the I.D. was confirmed. Now they just have to figure out which species of Elaenia it is.

Yeah I met the guy that found this, we were both at the Hooded Crane in Indiana. Awesome sighting, I hope they get a positive ID on the species. I don't think I'll be making it to this one though.
