Watching my feeder this morning when a male N. cardinal landed with a green caterpillar or grub in his beak. He dropped the worm in the tray and proceeded to eat sunflower seeds for 15 or 20 seconds. He them picked up the worm, ate and left. I guess he wanted some veggies with his entre'.
interesting behavior

Cardinals feed insects to their young. He probably stopped for a snack before bringing the grub to the nest.
