I have bluebirds nesting in a box at the corner of my backyard. They pretty much ignore the birds that come by the feeder, cardinals, nuthatches, chickadees, wrens even the blue jays but yesterday a starling landed on the feeder and the male bluebird immediately started dive-bombing him and kept it up until the starling left. Later in the day the first house sparrow that I have ever seen in my yard got the same treatment from both blue birds. Is it because they recognize the starling and HOSP as nest site competitors?

It sounds like they do! I have had Red-bellied WP dive-bomb Brown-headed Cowbirds. . . they seem to hate each other.
