Going through some old photos. I saw this one January 31, 2009 at the Kern Valley Bird Preserve in Kern County, CA. Is it a Ladderback?

It's not a downy, pattern on the back is wrong. I don't know enough about Western woodpeckers to confirm on the ladderback front.

The Downy isn't quite in the range for where I saw this bird. Looking at photos of Ladderbacks, it looks alot like one of those. If it is a Downy, it's a new lifer for me!

This is a Nuttall's Woodpecker. The black stripe on the face is more prominent than on Ladder-backed, and the top black bar on the back is thicker, also pointing to Nuttall's.
Latest lifers: Monk Parakeet, Field Sparrow, Blue-headed Vireo, Black-billed Cuckoo, Veery

I'll pass on positive ID, but will agree it's not a Downy - due to pattern on the back and wrong overall look.

I agree with Nuttall's, because of the mask as Guy pointed out.

Agree with Nuttall's. A Downy would show much more white on its back, without stripes going all the way across.

I agree. A Downy doesn't show a 'ladder' pattern on its back:

Thank you, all! Yes, I was wondering about that thick black line through the eye. It was really throwing me and I hadn't even considered a Nuttall's. It looks like the Kern River Reserve is just on or just outside of the eastern border of their range. So, that's a new lifer for me! THANK YOU!
