A pair of these birds showed up in my Columbia, SC backyard a few days ago. They appear to me to be similar in size and looks (somewhat) to a Northern Mockingbird, but they are much darker, and have a black stripe/patch on the top of their heads. They are mostly a very dark gray and their chests are a little lighter. Looking through my guide, the only thing I can find that looks anything similar is the Gray Catbird.

Agree with Gray Catbird. We're still waiting for 'em to arrive up here in NY.

Yep! My favorite backyard bird! I haven't heard one yet this spring, either.

And, like Mockingbirds, they do impressions. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a fascinating video out on YouTube demonstrating its ability to mimic:

4BlueStars, since you're in Columbia, have you ever been to Congaree National Park?

I would go as soon as possible. Migration's nearly in full swing here and the migrants will be out in full force within the next couple weeks. The birds should be most active in the early morning.
I went earlier this month, but didn't see as many migrants as I'd hope (I went in midday). Best birds I saw were the Parulas, Yellow-throated and Blue-throated Vireos, and my lifers Prairie and Prothonotary Warbler. I heard a Hooded Warbler and Ovenbird in the distance, though.
