Picture taken today 4/24/2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm guessing Hairy Woodpecker based on the length of the bill ... this would be the 1st guess I've gotten right ... and it would be my first Hairy too!!

This bird has black spots on the outer rectrices and appears to be missing some feathers around the base of the bill, making the bill look fairly long. It looks more like a Downy to me.

New Year's Resolutions:
Get my lifelist to 300 (currently 293)
Finally get Mountain Quail and Vesper Sparrow
Top my previous single year best (2011-253) I'm at 193 as of 5/12.

I agree with Downy. Bill is too short for Hairy, and the black spots on the tail also point to Downy.

This is why I post. At least my streak with guessing wrong continues.
Thanks

Downy for me. The bill looks relatively small compared to the head, plus the spots on the retrices are a good complimentary mark.

How big is the feeder? How big is bird compared to the feeder? Size is a very good way to distinguish these two birds. A Hairy is much larger than a Downy.
