I was wondering what kind of birds besides tanagers, and orioles like oranges? I am planing to set up an orange half on a stick, and was wondering what to expect. And is it early for tanagers and orioles? I haven't seen any but just was wondering.

Thanks, JB

I went outside today to fill my oriole feeder, which by the way has not been used yet this year, and to change my orange slices I have on a bird feeder hanger. They were almost dried out. I saw a red bellied woodpecker chowing on one slice. I don't know if he liked it because it was partially dried up, or if they eat them fresh as well. So, I guess the woodpeckers like them! I also put out plumped raisins in a bowl. Not sure who all likes them but they are usually gone by morning.

here we are still getting some frosty nights and its probably a week or so before the males show up and maybe two weeks before females come. some people put orange slices in a suet cage and hang it others diced up fruit in a bowl on a platform and other nail a half orange to the top of a branch i made a platform from a square of 2x6 with a long screw thru the bottom and hung it with nylon twine and screw a half orange or grapefruit down on the board. As the peck it down i pour a little orange juice in the half that they sip
the black headed grosbeaks and the orioles and tanagers all like the fruit but also the necter from the hummingbird feeders.i even have a few of the house finches after it too. i also put a lid on a platform and spoon grape or strawberry jam into the lid .

I've had grosbeaks, woodpeckers (mainly Red Headed and Red-Bellied WP's) and orioles enjoy oranges. Had a Robin last year that LOVED the grape jelly!

The Orioles and Grosbeaks should be in your area JimBob.... they are being reported (although still kinda spotty) in southern Michigan.

Grosbeaks like oranges too. I've seen grosebeaks take bits off the oranges that I have set out.

I have seen a oriole once in my yard. Never seen a grosbeak of any kind anywhere. I think that I will see some soon.

since i posted last week on here i have been getting migrants showing up. so far two different male bullocks orioles and 4 mourning doves and one blackheaded grosbeak and one male lazuli bunting. so i guess the official spring season is started here.

edit: since this morning i also just saw a male allen's hummingbird checking out the feeders but did not have the camera in hand.

i get the big sweet cherrys in late june or early july when they are on sale. the tanagers and orioles and grosbeaks all like them too expensive most of the time though. i sometime dice up fruit in a shallow bowl on a platform watermelon and pineapple and oranges and grapes and berrys if any are in season and reasonable.
and of course the grape or strawberry jam or jelly

I sometimes put out chopped apple, raspberries, blackberries. I planted 3 raspberry bushes last year. Hopefully this year they will produce a good amount. We have a dwarf peach tree that sometimes produces fruit. I also planted holly bushes in the front yard for winter berries.

I tried the freezedried mealworms for the first time this year in a bowl.... nothing went for them. That is until I went to the pet store and bought some live mealworm and put the in there. Robin, Blue Jays, and grackle(not exactly my desired species) so far eating them up... not caring if they are live or freeze dried now. I decieded to put some on the flat feeder as well and today the FOY(at feeder) RB Grosbeak enjoyed snacking on them an the seed as well. I tried the oranges last year with no luck... B. Orioles were spotted in the neighbors yard though. They just never made it to the feeders.
