I had an indigo bunting and blue grosbeak at my feeder at the same time last week. The difference in color was very noticeable.
I guess my thought to the coloration is "sometimes". Yes, in the bright light the Indigos come out much brighter. I had the good fortune of wading through 10s or 20s of both this week, and I spent a lot of time with the scope to make sure I could see the brown wings before being sure. Color wasn't an easy differentiator in most cases...for me, at least.
