I live in a suburb just outside of Los Angeles. Today my door was open and I could hear the distinct sound of seed being cracked. I mostly have gold finches and I they eat the nyjer, not from my other feeder. I looked outside and saw this bird. I quickly grabbed my camera and took some shots before it flew away. If this is a black headed grossbeak, I had no idea they could be seen here in the L.A. area.
Is this a black headed grossbeak?

Yes, that's a black-headed grosbeak. According to Sibley's, CA is part of their summer range.

Either a female or a youngling. My males don't have the stripes:
