Cape Cod

Is this an American Black? It looked like Mottled, but i think range is off. How do you tell the difference?

When was this photo taken? I may be being stupid (quite possible) but don't the white outer tail feathers and the buffy breast feathers make this an eclipse male Mallard? I don't see much about this duck besides bill coloration that points to American Black Duck, and bill color would be fine for an eclipse male Mallard.

Edit: Maybe hybrid, actually? Surely not pure A. Black Duck, with that tail, though?

Yeah you guys are right. I wasn't thinking it might have been taken during a different time of year.
