Which Dowitcher?

I saw this bird at Bombay Hook NWR here in Delaware last week on Friday. I looked in my ID book and the closest thing was a dowitcher, but I'm not sure which one. Please help!! Either one would be a lifer.

You're right on it being a Dowitcher sp., but I won't venture a guess beyond that. Did you hear it calling? Voice is the only good diagnostic I've come across.

I didn't hear him call-- I think he was too busy eating.

Both Long and Short-billed Dowitchers have been reported in your area. Sibley states that an adult breeding Short-billed Dowitcher of the Atlantic subspecies can be distinguished from a Long-billed Dowitcher breeding adult, by the color of the belly, which is white for the Short-billed and entirely rufous for the Long-billed.

Sooooo... Short-billed?? Both are commonly seen at Bombay Hook in spring.

I'd assume Short-Billed after the second set of photos, based on Grandpa's comments about the extent of red on the belly and the feeding posture (a long-billed usually looks more hump-backed).

Not 100% certain, but I never am with Dowitchers...
