They nested in not the greatest place, in a vine on a trellis, close to the house, not a lot of cover?
She was the sweetest little bird, I could work outside around her and though I tried to not get too close to her to avoid disturbing her and her nest, she would sit right there with her little eyes looking at me like I had not trespassed at all. And if she did leave her nest, it was just momentarily, she was a devoted bird! I was standing in between my house and my neighbors house and we discussed some birds, I told him about the mockingbird nest that is just about on our property line in a tree, just to make sure he did not get dive bombed, etc. And here came my chipping sparrow, within 2 feet of my face, landed on a little branch of a young tree, so close to me, that even my neighbor commented how comfortable that bird was with me. Yesterday she was right there sitting on her eggs. This morning when I got up she was not on her nest, she does take a break now and then so I was not immediately concerned. Went about my normal business of the day, checked on her a time or two. She was never there. I could have just had bad timing, so I waited til tonight, when I KNEW she would be there, and she is not there. Something must have gotten her. Because I know she would not have left those eggs! The only reason I even knew there was a nest there is I saw her show up to the vine with some pine needles in her mouth, and I looked to see after she left, saw the makings of a little nest in the beginning stages. She made her nest and laid her eggs and sat there day in and day out, never flinched if we cut grass, or whatever we did outside. So it was unusual to not see her in her nest this morning. And she wasn't there all day today whenever I checked. And she is not there tonight, when I know she should be there in the cooler temps of the evening. It was hot enough today the eggs would be fine, but in the evening she would be on the nest. I have seen her sit on that nest through rain, hail, everything. She is just gone and breaks my heart.
What I have learned so far.... just because you think that bird is just another _____ (house sparrow, chickadee, crow or whatever you are used to seeing) look a little closer... you just might be surprised!

Awww. :(

Our chipping sparrow nest failed this year, too. It made me sad, they are sweet little birds.

Yep they are very trusting and sweet and so cute! Hard not to get attached to the little critters!
