Michigan bird?

help ID this bird

This bird showed up at my house yesterday and hung out all day at our feeder. its the first time we have seen this bird. we usually get the normal finch and blue jays.

its a little bigger than a finch with a round tail.

Thank you! thats what i thought the bird was but the pictures i found on the internet did not match the white under the chin so i was not sure.

Agree with rose-breasted grosbeak. Great bird. Still waiting for a male this year....

The white in the pic is its bill. They are huge and light-colored.

Where are you in MI? Both the Males and females arrived up here a few days ago. I've noticed that the Males will vary considerably in their "patterns" (for lack of a better word).
Enjoy! and listen for them singing (either sounds like a Robin with a sore throat..... or a Robin on LSD.... ;) )

i am in croswell- lexington area. i have yet to hear them "sing" i'm sure it will be a real treat.

Yes, the rose-breasted grosbeak is a robin with singing lessons (similar song as robin, but prettier and more melodic). It's the scarlet tanager that sounds like a robin with a sore throat - similar to robin, but raspier. I can pick them out right away.
