I thought about posting this in the photography forum, but I think what I have to say belongs here instead. I am new to the interest in birds, no less passionate about it, but new just the same! The camera I had did not capture the images of the birds I was asking for help to identify, and my husband bought me a new camera for a mothers day/25th anniversary gift! (love him!) Now the talents of the folks here are just amazing, how they can take a blurry image I post and tell me what bird I saw is quite a feat, I hope someday I will be even half as good! But I am already getting tired of taking finch pictures and am eager to go out and see some other birds! And I am sure it is going to help all of you help me figure out what bird I just saw if we have better pictures!
What I have learned so far.... just because you think that bird is just another _____ (house sparrow, chickadee, crow or whatever you are used to seeing) look a little closer... you just might be surprised!

I would suggest you go birding as often as possible. The more time you spend in the field, the better your ID skills will get. Eventually you'll be out in the field one day, you'll hear a bird call without seeing it and suddenly realize you know what it is.

New Year's Resolutions:
Get my lifelist to 300 (currently 293)
Finally get Mountain Quail and Vesper Sparrow
Top my previous single year best (2011-253) I'm at 193 as of 5/12.

Latest Lifer(s):Harris's Sparrow, Oka Ponds, Campbell, CA, 1/1/13
