I'm thinking this must be a Downy Woodpecker but couldn't get a good look at the bill. Downy or something else? Thanks.

Looks like a Downy to me, Jeff. I just saw one the other day in Florida. :)

Any idea on the size? It's tough to judge between a Hairy and Downy based on this picture.

Very small bird. I have lots of problems downy v. hairy and that's why I came down on the side of Downy.

I think this ID will have to be on you, Jeff. If it looked very small, I'd say go with your gut and call it a female Downy.

Without the bill in the shot, size can't be judged and I'm afraid we can't really establish size and distinguish between the two.

It is definately a downy woodpecker. My grandmother has a few of these out by her house. They are cute and very timid.

Oniguma, how are you distinguishing it from a Hairy? I don't really think size can be judged in that shot.

Actually, if I absolutely had to put a name on this bird, I'd call it a Hairy -- the outer tail feathers don't appear to have black spots, and there seems to be a shoulder spur heading forwards. But -- this is a really tough angle to work with, so I wouldn't put any money on it.

The tail seems very short. I suspect it's a Downy.
