hairy or downy?

and how do you tell the difference?

Bill size is a good indicator. Hairys have a bill about as long as their head, while downies have one less than half the length of their head. Hairy in the first two pictures, Downy in the last two, I'd guess.

Two other tricks -- the Hairy's have entirely white outer tail feathers, while the Downy's usually have black spots on those feathers. Second, the Hairy's have a black spur at the shoulder extending forwards, the Downy's show little if any spur.

And, the size of the bird. One that's about the same size as the suet feeder (like the ones in your photos) will be a Downy. And, very often, the short bill gives the Downy almost a babyish look that the Hairy lack.
