I hope to be visiting Maine (Portland and then just driving up the coast) in very late July. Wondering if there were some birding spots I shouldn't miss. Never been up there, looking forward to it. Thanks for any ideas.

You should hit up Acadia National Park like TheBillyPilgrim is in the thread below this one. Looks like you two will just miss each other. :)

If you can get far enough up the coast, go on a tour to see an Atlantic Puffin. There'll be other sea birds as well, but the puffin is the winner. There are a whole bunch of these boat trips out of most of the harbor ports. Just google it and you'll get a huge list. I went on this one: http://mainepuffin.com, but other people might have other recommendations.

In Booth Bay, which is about an hours drive up the coast (route 1) from Portland, you might like the Booth Bay Botanical Gardens. Also check out the Damariscotta River Association. Both have websites and are well worth a visit.
