When I move to CA I want to start a bird garden. It'll have baths, feeders and bird friendly plants. But one problem is what plants do I use? I kind of would like them to be CA natives. Plants for Hummingbirds, and plants for seed eaters. I would love any answer!

I'm planning on planting Sunflowers. . . so that's one.

Thanks, JB

I have an outstanding book of native CA plants for butterflies and birds. Tonight I will add on to whatever people come up with here (I'm at work). Where are you moving to?

Southern CA, like near-ish to San Diego.

Could you give me the name of the book?

Actually, it is a publication made by the Aptos Nursery in Aptos CA. I picked it up from a used book sale. It's not something you can find on the web, more like a huge pamphlet. But I will get the list of plants for you.

I was going to list what we have, but you are better off knowing what is suitable for California. If you want to ever join a forum about native plants and such, WildlifeGardeners.org is a good one.

Life list (non ABA)- 204 Latest: Scarlet Tanager

Coolest: Audubon's Warbler
2013 Year list- 165
Yard list- 108 Latest: Scarlet Tanager

Coolest: Lesser Yellowlegs (This bird was terribly lost during our May snow, we are near no shore for this shorebird)
