We made a homemade feeder.


Had success (A little one took this picture and others.) She drank well.


We never thought hummingbirds would take to our feeders so well. The Oriole feeder has a built in ant moat, we have another that has an ant moat over it. We bought an ant thing not realizing it has pesticide in it until later, but that is now hanging above this one until we can get another ant moat.

Is there any possible way to make an ant moat from things we might have around the house? Or anything to keep ants out. I've heard people use vaseline to keep wasps from drinking from hummingbird feeders. Would something like that smeared on the hanging hook maybe prevent ants from going down it?

i made several here at home what i did was cut a lenght of nylon twine from the crafts basket tied a loop in the top to hang it with and then drilled a hole in the center of a peanut butter jar lid. put the twine down thru the hole in the lid and tied a knot about half way. and slid the lid down to the knot. took some super glue and glued the twine and hole and lt it dry good then tied the bottom of the twine to the necter feeder to hang it. with the hot dry summers i get here i would fill it with fresh water each day when i checked on the feeders. it has worked good over the years except for a few big carpenter ants managed to swim from the twine to the edge of the lid.

I did basically this exact thing but filled my moat with vaseline - doesn't evaporate as fast and nothing can swim through it.
