I live in San Diego, coastal sage scrub area about 3mi inland. This bird appeared mid-April and particularly likes hiding in the large black acacia tree. Occasionally, I'll see it rolling around in the dirt in my backyard. It moves very quickly and prefers to remain hidden.
Small (5") medium brown bird with lighter-colored eye line. I'm inclined to say it's a Bewick's wren, but I've never heard the "jipp" call or anything like it (I've heard a much higher-pitched call). Its song also seems much less varied than examples I can find online, only displaying two main songs that are each always the same.
