Taken today at Robert Moses State Park, NY. Cloudy and foggy and a couple of hundred yards offshore.

Looks good to me -- in addition to the silvery underwings, these birds were close to shore on a day without much wind. There simply aren't too many procellarids that will do that.

Thanks, everyone. There were folks there with spotting scopes and the Sooty Shearwaters have been doing a flyby for a few days now. Hopefully, if the conditions are better they may still be there tomorrow.

Yeah .. there have been reports of many Sootys in close at various spots along the NJ Coast... but none for me yet.
