Taken east of Phoenix in mid April. Waited for a call, got nothing. Anything more than an empid?

Nice picture of an...empid. Not sure which, but I am in the Dusky/Hammond's camp, and would favor Dusky if a gun were pointed to my head.

Love the decision based on a life or death choice. lol My guess would be Dusky I think.

It's got a pretty huge eyering that tapers in the back. That plus the primary projection points my towards Cordilleran IMO.

If this is a Cordilleran, the color balance on the photo would be way off. Cordillerans are primarily yellowish below, including the throat. (If one showed up here in Illinois, it would almost certainly be called a Yellow-bellied, unless it sang for someone with some experience with the species.) Cordillerans also have pale lower mandibles - this one is mostly dark.

Thanks very much for the excellent discussion. Based on a prior picture I have of a Pacific-Slope/Cordilleran the lower bill observation looks definitive.
Looking at the ratio of the left wing projection to the length of the tail can Hammond's be more likely?

I'm not sure if bill color, or any other color for that matter, can be properly ascertained from a backlit image like this.

Looks like I am digging a dry hole. Just to humor me, here is a backlit example of a Pacific-slope/Cordilleran where bicolor bill is obvious.

My first thought when seeing this photo was Dusky/Hammond's. Doesn't look at all yellow enough for Cordilleran/Pacific-Slope to my eye.

I just reread my post in this thread and realized it might have been easy to misconstrue. What I meant was that the original photo that started the thread was Dusky/Hammond's, not the second photo that you identified as Cordilleran/Pac-Slope. I agree with you on that one.
