At night in the woods behind our house in SE PA, I can hear a bird that sounds a lot like the Peterson's guide sample call for a lesser nighthawk. It sounds like a slowed down version of the whatbird call. These birds have no business being in SE PA, so I thought I would ask if anyone knows of a bird that should be in that area with a similar call. I thought about common nighthawks but their sample calls are more of a peent.

Maybe Wilson's Snipe? They are slightly higher pitched, but do sound similar. Here are some recordings, you want to listen to the ones labeled "winnowing"

That sound is actually produced by their tail feathers in flight, I believe.

Working theory from local birders is Screech Owl. Given their size, I think it will be tough to find.
