Taken on 5-21-12 at Moses Lake,WA. Hoping for Tri-colored, but no convincing evidence it's not Red-winged. What's the concensus of opinion? Thanks as always, Mac.

That would be a Red-Winged blackbird. :) Nice shot.

Edit: I think it's a Red-Winged based on the amount of red on it's wing, I'm not sure if that is a good thing to judge on it though.

Looks like that band is white, not yellow, I'd vote for a wayward Tri-colored Blackbird personally. Any one else?

According to the range map in National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America (sixth edition) that would be within the irregular breeding range. And ebird shows a sighting at Othello yesterday. That said, on some Red-wings the yellow on the "shoulder" can appear almost white. If you have Stokes Field Guide to the Birds of North America take a look at the Red-wing pic labeled "Adult m., summer, displaying, Eastern Grp.-NH/04", upper left pic on page 716 and compare it with the Trike pic labled "Adult m.-CA 05", lower left pic on page 718 and you'll see how similar they can look. Two key field marks to look for to seperate the two are the bill (Trike bills are thinner at the base) and sheen (Trikes do not show as much iridescence as Red-wings). Do you have any other picks showing the bill at a differant angle?

Nice find Mac! You gotta love birding from Moses Lake to the Potholes. Did you stop by Birders Corner?

Fisherman1313, Yes, I have studied those pics in my Stokes guide and you are right, it's very hard to see much difference in the two. The Red-winged on page 716 that has a bar that looks almost white is from the Eastern Group. Would that group even be in Washington? Most of the Red-wings I see here are usually definately yellow.
I am attaching another picture, with the bill open. I'm not sure that it will help much. It does seem that the bill looks longer than a usual Red-winged, but that could be wishful thing on my part. Thanks again,Mac.

Yes, I hit at least 13 spots from the Coulee Corridor Birding Trails Map, including Birders Corner. It was a great 2 days. I picked up a Clark's Grebe and a Northern Rough-winged Swallow for my list. If the concesus of opinion continues to favor Tri-colored Blackbird, that will be a plus. The folks at the NWR headquarters in Othello marked a map for me with 2 locations where Burrowing Owls had been seen. I found the dens, but no owls. I was really wanting to see a Black-crowned Night Heron also, so I will be going back soon. Mac

I can only find references to the eastern groug and Bicolored in my guides, nothing about any other subspecies groups. I doubt an eastern group bird would be in WA. I can't say for sure which you have from the pic but it appears that the bill may be thinner than a Red-wing. If you heard it vocalize that would give you a positive ID.

Fisherman1313, I just listened to the vocalizations of Tricolored, Red-winged and Yellowheaded Blackbirds on my Kindle. I can't remember that it sounded exactly like the Tri-colored, but I have heard many Red-wings and Yellow-heads and I think I would have recognized their calls. But, then again, no two birds sound exactly alike. Thanks again, Mac.

I've heard that there's a black crowned night heron roost at the Potholes but I have no idea where. We'd be up for a expedition to fine it if we had a clue where to look. The Corfu area is good for blackbirds too - it's closer to Royal City than Othello. Did you hear that the burrowing owl burrows in Othello were destroyed?

No I didn't hear about the burrows. Was it vandalism or farming?

I'm sorry to say that I lean towards Red-winged for the blackbird. Generally in Tricolored, the red is dark, which makes the white bar stand out much more. Given the date and the nesting habits of Tri-colored, it also seems unlikely to see just one adult male.
