Does anyone know where Carolina Wrens like to nest? I've seen a pair of Carolinas carrying nesting material and food around my yard. I've narrowed down 3 possible answers to where the nest is: under my deck, in a maple tree, or in an unused owl box. Any ideas where they might be?

I've had them nest in hanging plants on my porch. Not on the edge of the porch, but back, close to the house! They built covered nests - they had a roof on them! My vote is for under your deck.

ANYWHERE.

We had a pair nest successfully in a capri sun box in our recycle pile in our carport this year.

Just about anywhere. I made a ball of wire about the size of a soccer ball and hung it up in the corner of my carport, they built a nest in it and there have already been two broods that fledged out of it this year. My mom had some nest in a pouch on her bicycle a couple years ago. They love to nest in the open fronted cabinets in my dad's shed. Last year some nested in my milk crate bicycle basket. I made the wire ball with hopes they'd nest in it instead of my basket, and it worked. Like others have said, they readily nest in potted plants. They seem to prefer anywhere that is covered.

So probably the under my deck then?

That would be my guess, or they are in something you wouldn't even think about. There are stories of them nesting in boots left outside. Definitely not in the trees, though.

Hmm... I just remembered: we have 2 propane tanks under our deck. I was walking by one of them and saw a pile of leaves in the opening in the top. Could that be them, do you think?

I had a pair nest on top of my garage door opener, in October! They were crawling under the door.

We found the nest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Turns out, it WAS in the top of our propane tank!! We have about 4-6 chicks covered with down feathers, all sleeping. They were soooo cute!! They were all mushed together, with beaks and wings outstretched everywhere, making counting impossible. But they were adorable!!!
And I just checked our House Wren nest, and there's newly hatched fledgelings with no feathers at all. Their eyes are all bulgy!! :D

The locations on my property they have nested: the band-saw (2x), the shed, a cavity, and a bluebird box. They have attempted to nest in the wheel-well of the truck, but that failed.

It's really fun when they fledge, they hang out with their parents for at least a few days, hopping around the yard.

I can't wait until they're fully fledged!! Do you think they'll come back next year if the nest isn't disturbed?

Well, I checked up on their chicks today in between storms to make sure they were all right and I saw that they are almost fully fledged. So I guess that means that theres plenty of time for a second batch of chicks!!! :D
