Life list 226. Latest lifers: Townsend's Warbler, Gray Jay, Bullock's Oriole, White-headed Woodpecker, Cassin's Finch, Western Bluebird, White-throated Swift, Olive-sided Flycatcher and Hermit Thrush.

I like California for this bird much better than either Black-backed Gull, not least for the fact that they'd both be very out of range (though range maps are especially relative when it comes to gulls, in my experience).
I agree with California Gull -- Big mirror in P10, smaller in P9, plus color and bill look good
As for the Black-backed Gulls, we get a small but usually consistent number of Lesser , but pretty much only in the winter time. Greater shows up too, but again, in winter
